Card Security Tips for National Consumer Protection Week

March 7, 2024

In recognition of National Consumer Protection Week, Bay State Savings Bank is working to raise awareness about the critical importance of understanding and preventing consumer security threats. As technology evolves, so do the tactics scammers employ to obtain your personal information. At Bay State Savings Bank, we are committed to ensuring the safety and security of your financial transactions. Follow these valuable tips to help protect your information, whether your transaction is at an ATM, online, or in-person:

  1. Always Protect Your Personal Identification Number (PIN): Your PIN is the gateway to securely accessing your funds. Safeguard your PIN by shielding the keypad when entering it at ATMs or checkout counters to prevent unauthorized individuals from observing your code. Avoid storing your PIN on websites or using autofill features, as these practices can compromise your security. Remember, never disclose your PIN to anyone, including friends and family.

  1. Beware of Skimmers and Compromised ATMs: Sophisticated skimming devices can be discreetly attached to card readers, including ATMs and gas pumps. Before inserting your card into any reader, inspect the keypad and card slot for any signs of tampering. When using a point-of-sale terminal, gently wiggle components to check for stability. Look out for irregularities such as misaligned buttons or loose parts. If something seems amiss or easily removable, avoid using that machine and promptly notify the authorities or the bank.

  1. Exercise Caution Online: While online transactions offer convenience, they also pose risks. Refrain from conducting financial transactions or online banking on public Wi-Fi networks, as they are susceptible to hacking. Look for secure networks and websites when making online purchases. Verify the security of a website by checking for “https://” in the URL and a padlock icon in the browser’s address bar. Avoid autosaving or linking your debit card information to enhance your personal information security.

  1. Regularly Review Bank Statements: Vigilantly monitoring your bank statements is crucial for identifying any unauthorized transactions. Utilize online banking services to frequently review your account history and statements. Compare your online banking transactions with monthly statements to detect any discrepancies. If you spot suspicious activity, such as unfamiliar transactions, promptly report it to your financial institution. Timely detection and reporting of fraudulent activity can help mitigate potential damages.

By adhering to these four card security guidelines, you can reduce the risk of falling victim to fraud. Remember, your attentiveness is key to shielding yourself from potential dangers in an increasingly digital landscape. We at Bay State Savings Bank are committed to empowering consumers with the knowledge and tools needed to protect their financial assets. Together, let’s prioritize consumer security by staying vigilant this National Consumer Protection Week, and every week!
